Memories Companion (Mac) · Last Updated: April 28, 2026
Anurag Tiwari (“we”, “us”, or “our”) built Memories Companion. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use the Mac app.
The Short Version
Memories Companion is a free Mac app that sends photos directly to the Memories app on your iPhone over your local Wi-Fi network. Nothing routes through any server we operate. We have no accounts, no analytics, and no way to see your photos.
Information We Do Not Collect
Memories Companion is designed with privacy as a core principle. We do not:
- Collect, transmit, or sell your personal data to third parties
- Use any analytics, tracking, advertising, or telemetry SDKs
- Access your photos without your explicit action
- Operate any server that handles your photo content
- Send any diagnostic or crash data automatically
How the App Works
Memories Companion does two things, both initiated by you:
- Reads photos from a source you pick — either a folder you choose, or (if you grant access) your Mac Photos library via PhotoKit
- Serves those photos over your local Wi-Fi — an HTTP server on your Mac advertises a Bonjour service (
_photossync._tcp) that the Memories iPhone app discovers and pairs with using a 6-digit PIN you enter on the iPhone
Photos move directly from your Mac to your iPhone over your local network. They do not pass through any server we operate.
Permissions Explained
- Photos library access — Required only if you choose the “Mac Photos” source. The app requests read access via the standard macOS prompt and uses Apple’s PhotoKit framework.
- Local Network access — Used to advertise the Bonjour service and accept connections from your iPhone. Macs on your local network (other than your iPhone) cannot access content without the pairing PIN.
- User-selected folder access — If you choose a folder source, macOS gives Memories Companion read-only access to that folder via the standard system file picker. We persist a security-scoped bookmark so you don’t have to re-pick on every launch.
iCloud
If you sign into iCloud on your Mac and enable iCloud Drive, Memories Companion uses Apple’s CloudKit framework as a secondary delivery channel for your photos. The data is stored in your personal iCloud container (iCloud.com.anuragtiwari.photossync), accessible only by your own devices signed into your Apple ID. We never receive a copy.
Data Stored on Your Mac
The app stores the following data locally on your Mac only:
- App preferences (batch size, sort order, last folder choice)
- A security-scoped bookmark to your last selected folder, so it can be reopened without a re-prompt
- The list of iPhones that have successfully paired (their device IDs, not their photo content)
- A temporary export cache for Mac Photos exports, automatically cleared when you stop a session
Subscriptions
Memories Companion is completely free. There are no in-app purchases, no subscriptions, and no premium tier.
Photo Metadata
EXIF metadata embedded in your photos (dates, GPS coordinates, camera info) travels with the photos to your iPhone. It is not extracted, collected, or transmitted to us.
Third-Party Services
Memories Companion uses zero third-party SDKs. The only external service involved is Apple’s iCloud (CloudKit), governed by Apple’s Privacy Policy.
Data Deletion
To remove all data:
- Local data on your Mac: Delete the app from /Applications. macOS removes the app’s sandboxed container and preferences with it.
- iCloud data: This is shared with the Memories iPhone app; manage it via iOS Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Manage Storage > Memories.
Children’s Privacy
Memories Companion does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. The app does not contain user-generated content, social features, or any data collection mechanisms.
